The problem

If you've used Google but never an AI assistant, it's easy to assume they're the same. They're related, but they help in different ways.

What you need to know

Think of a library. A search engine like Google is the librarian who points you to the shelf and hands you books to read — you still find the answer yourself. An AI assistant is that same librarian giving you a plain-language first answer based on what it has learned, and you can ask follow-ups. Quick example: ask a search engine "how long to soft-boil an egg" and you get a list of recipe links to skim. Ask an AI assistant and it just says: about 6 minutes in gently boiling water, then cool it — and you can reply "a little firmer?" and it adjusts. So: search points you to sources; an AI assistant explains the answer in plain words. Neither is "better" — AI is handy for explaining, drafting, and summarizing; search is better for the latest news, prices, or a specific website. One honest note: AI is helpful but can be confidently wrong — sounding sure even when it isn't. That's normal, and later in this path you'll learn an easy way to check the answers that matter.
